The couple lived in Kirkintilloch until they moved to Melbourne, Australia, in 1976. They still regularly come back home to visit and decided it was the perfect place to mark 50 years of marriage. Billy and Elizabeth, both aged 66, had a party with around 80 family and friends at the Rangers Club. Both were born and bred in the town and met while at Townhead Secondary. They married in Hillhead Church on November 7, 1962. Billy was an electrician and Elizabeth worked in a clothes shop. They have two sons, Billy and Alexander, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The couple decided to move to Australia after hearing about it from friends who lived there. However, Billy and Elizabeth did return to live in Kirkintilloch a couple of times as they found it hard to settle in the country. But they now enjoy living there and still make regular trips back to their home town. Billy said: “We come back fairly regularly, around every three years. As this was the big anniversary we decided it would be nice to see everyone we hadn’t seen for years. “Our eldest son Billy, his wife Kylie and our grandson Alistair also came with us. Our friends Jackie and Fiona Muldoon organised most of the party for us. It was absolutely fantastic. We would like to thank everyone who came.” * Have you got a story, picture or comment?
