Window on the Past: Post Office, Telephone and Tea Room

Most of us carry mobile phones around with us: phones which can do such amazing things, they would not have seemed credible 20 years ago, let alone 100.
But the next time you Skype or conference call, think that, as in this week’s pic, it was all so very different at the start of the last century.

Of course public phone boxes are still much a part of our landscape, but back then, for many, it was the only means of long-distance communication (other than writing a letter) as most homes did not have their own phone.
